Persistent sadness
This disease can cause sadness and hopelessness. If you are sad a great deal of the time and are unable to find joy and happiness, you may be suffering from depression. Persistant sadness can also include thoughts of death and suicide.
Anxiety
Persistent anxiety can cause feelings of nervousness, apprehension and worry. This can manifest itself in heart palpitations, sweating, muscle tension, insomnia, lack of energy, fatigue and shortness of breath. Many emotional symptoms are apparent as well. You may feel tense and jumpy or afraid.
Decreased energy
Decreased energy can feel as if everything has "slowed" down. The National Institute of Mental Health describes this as slower thinking, slower moment and slower reactions. You may feel as though you do not have the motivation to do anything that you need to do.
Loss of enjoyment
Clinically depressed individuals have a difficult time finding enjoyment in activities that previously brought fulfillment and happiness. If you find that you can no longer bring yourself out of sadness by doing something that you really enjoy, you need to contact a doctor to help you out of this depression.
Alcohol or drug abuse
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, substance abuse is commonly found in those suffering from bipolar disorder. Alcohol and drug abuse will make the depression worse once the effects of the substance wear off. Drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines can trigger mania, while alcohol and tranquilizers can trigger depression.
Change in appetite
You may find that you are overeating in order to cope with the sadness. Some people find comfort in food and turn to it during periods of depression. Conversely, some individuals find that they do not have the energy or desire to eat anything.
Suicidal thoughts
According to the Mayo Clinic, suicide is a huge risk factor for those suffering from bipolar depression. Thoughts of suicide warrant an immediate call for help. Many individuals are too embarrassed to talk to family and friends. If you do not feel that you can confide in family and friends, contact a doctor immediately.
